The Jazz Singer

US (1952): Musical/Drama

In this first re-make of the 1927 classic, Danny Thomas takes the Jolson role in a straightforward rendition of the by-now familiar tale of the cantor's son who chooses show biz over filial duty. Not as compelling without the historical context, but interesting for Michael Curtiz's direction, Thomas's feeling for the role, and the appearance of Peggy Lee. The third version of the story to be filmed would star Neil Diamond and Laurence Olivier (1980). (Warner Bros.) (amctv.com)
