My Cousin Rachel

US (1952): Mystery/Romance

Richard Burton, in his Hollywood debut, plays Philip Ashley, a wealthy young man in 19th-century England who receives letters from his cousin (and best friend) that seem to imply that the man's wife (Olivia de Havilland) is poisoning him. The cousin dies, and his attractive widow soon comes for a visit. Burton initially mistrusts her, but he soons falls in love with her, giving her everything he owns. His suspicions revive, with catastrophic consequences when her lawyer (George Dolenz) arrives at the estate, and he coaxes Burton to try some of de Havilland's tea. His anger and suspicions lead to a death that leaves many questions unanswered. De Havilland returned to the screen after a three-year absence to take the role of the murderously attractive widow. Nunnally Johnson adapted Daphne Du Maurier's novel to the screen. Henry Koster directs for Fox. (amctv.com)
