The Four Poster
US (1952): Drama/Comedy
Staged as a series of seven bedroom vignettes, this drama of a married couple's ups and downs is adapted from Jan de Hartog's stage play of the same name. With the master bedroom's great four-poster bed as the visual and symbolic center of this self-consciously theatrical production, Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer feel their way with humor and pathos through the formative events of their union -- childrearing, infidelities, and the losing of a son in WW I. Interspersed with the drama are animated shorts (directed by John Hubley), which offer a quirky commentary on this human comedy.
Harrison returned to Hollywood to make the film. He had been living in England with wife Palmer since 1948 to avoid the scandal following his affair with actress Carole Landis and her subsequent suicide. Irving Reis directs for Columbia. (amctv.com)
