Martin Luther
US/West Germany (1953): Drama/Biography
On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses, which called for a dispute on the teachings of the Church, to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Originally written in Latin and intended only for scholarly debate, they sparked such interest that local printers soon translated them into the common language. This debate ignited the Protestant reformation. At the heart of the gospel, in Luther's estimation, was the doctrine of justification by faith -- the teaching that Christ's own righteousness is imputed to those who believe, and on that ground alone, they are accepted by God. Director Irving Pichel has captured this explosive era of Christian history in this timeless drama. Niall MacGinnis dramatically portrays Martin Luther as he takes his stand against the Church while resting his faith firmly in Christ. (Krohne Family Media)
