The Seven Little Foys

US (1955): Musical/Drama/Family

Vaudeville entertainer Eddie Foy (Bob Hope), who has vowed to forever keep his act a solo, falls in love with and marries Italian ballerina Madeleine (Mille Vitale). While they continue to tour the circuit, they begin a family and before long have seven little Foys to clutter the wings. After tragedy threatens to stall Eddie's career, he comes to realize that his little terrors are worth their weight in gold. (Chris Stone, IMDb)

Melville Shavelson directs the Little Foys for Paramount: Billy Gray, Lee Erickson, Paul De Rolf, Lydia Reed, Linda Bennett, Jimmy Baird and Tommy Duran. James Cagney reprises his 1942 Oscar®-winning role of George M. Cohan. He agreed to play Cohan again in The Seven Little Foys on condition that he would not be paid for the role. He did the role as a tribute to Eddie Foy, who had generously provided occasional meals for struggling young actors, including Cagney, in 1920's New York. He sang "Mary" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" in the film.
