The Naked Eye
US (1956): Documentary
This 71-minute documentary is a celebration of photographers and photography. No mere dry treatise, the film endeavors to convey the fun and enjoyment of photography to the uninitiated. Photographer/Filmmaker Lou Stoumen achieves the near-impossible by bringing still pictures to "life" through the utilization of a process he described as "photographic animation," far better seen than described. In addition, Stoumen offers generous vignettes from Willard Van Dyke's similarly-themed documentary The Photographer (1948). The Naked Eye was narrated by Raymond Massey, with music provided by Elmer Bernstein. (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)
