This film is a riveting thriller that chronicles the French Resistance's attempt to stop a train taking crates of fine French art to Nazi Germany. Burt Lancaster plays the train inspector who is persuaded to help the French Resistance sabotage the train, and the film winds up as a battle of wits between Lancaster and Paul Scofield, who plays the German colonel who ordered the seizing of the art. Arthur Penn started as the film's director, but he was fired and replaced by John Frankenheimer. Cast also features Jeanne Moreau, Suzanne Flon and Albert Rémy.
