Georgy Girl

UK (1966): Comedy

This is a thoroughly entertaining romantic comedy about Georgy (Lynn Redgrave), a slightly overweight virgin in her early 20s who shares an apartment with the gorgeous, promiscuous Meredith (Charlotte Rampling). Georgy has never been the subject of the desire for any man until a wealthy, married friend of her family (James Mason) decides he would like her for his mistress. Shortly afterward, the unmarried Meredith becomes pregnant and introduces Georgy to the father (Alan Bates). Georgy and the father fall in love, Meredith agrees to let her roommate raise the baby. However, Georgy can't decide whether to settle down with the father or the married man, who has also indicated that he wants to marry her. Thanks to the funny, humane script and terrific performances from the entire cast, Georgy Girl was a tremendously popular film upon its 1966 release, as was the Seekers' catchy title song. Silvio Narizzano directs for Columbia. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide)
