Le Volcan interdit
(The Forbidden Volcano)

France (1966): Documentary

Aided and abetted by Chris Marker's sardonic commentary, Haroun Tazieff visits some of the world's most active volcanoes and, with superb photography, captures close-ups of exploding rivers of boiling larva, lakes of steaming acid fringed by steaming jets of sulphur gas, and legions of scientists taking measurements and samples. At the heart of the film is a record of an expedition to reach the bottom of the Niragongo Volcano in the former Congo. (BFI - UK)
