The Andromeda Strain

US (1971): Mystery/Science Fiction

The Andromeda Strain is a deadly extraterrestrial virus, brought to earth when a research satellite crashes near a tiny Arizona town. Everyone in the community dies within days, except for a baby and an "insulated" drunkard. Recruited from labs all over North America, doctors David Wayne, Arthur Hill, Kate Reid, and James Olson don radiation suits and race against time to isolate and destroy the virus. Based on a novel by Michael Crichton. The climactic, near-silent sequences make up for the film's occasional arid stretches. Robert Wise directs. (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)

The story was remade into a 4-hour mini-series for the A&E cable network in 2008. Directed by Mikael Salomon, the cast featured Benjamin Bratt, Andre Braugher, Eric McCormack, Christa Miller and Daniel Dae Kim.
