Tchaikovsky
(a.k.a. "Chaikovsky" and "Tschaikowski")

USSR (1969): Biography

Innokenty Smotkunovsky essays the title role in this Russian production. Avoiding the erotic sensationalism of Kenneth Russell's The Music Lovers (also released in the US in 1971), the film illustrates how Tchaikovsky's life and work were virtually one in the same. Among the many highlights are the re-creations of the composer's ballets, brilliantly performed by Maya Plisetskaya. Igor Talankin directs. (Mosfilm/Artkino) (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)
