The Morning Spider

UK (1976): Short/Comedy/Family/Romance

During one twenty-four hour period, the morning spider encounters a bee, a gang of flies, a beautiful blue fly, a wasp, a troupe of termites and a magnificently feminine red spider. His neighbor the centipede visits for the night, but takes until dawn to drop his 120 shoes. A jackhammer wasp digs right across the morning spider's threshold. When he has captured the iridescent Blue Fly, he cannot bring himself to eat her and lets her fly away. The way some ants make their aphids work doesn't appeal to the morning spider at all, but when he follows a mysterious cord and comes upon the red spider, he knows he has found his romantic destiny. The surprising conclusion to the story is an enormous cigarette butt, still smoldering, which crashes into the forest causing all the insects to scamper away coughing and wheezing, this capping the entertaining film with a clear-cut message.

The talented and always surprising Julian Chagrin brings to life the title role of a hardworking, but often inept, morning spider. In the old tradition of British pantomime, he and his mime troupe carry off this unusual fantasy as a natural, believable children's story. (kidsmartvideo.com)
