US-UK (1977): Drama

Richard Burton plays psychiatrist Martin Dysart, who attempts to discover why young Alan Strang (Peter Firth) has taken to mutilating live horses. In probing Alan's psyche, Dysart discovers that the source of the boy's obsession is his mother (Joan Plowright), who has raised Alan with a convoluted set of values. Even as he gets closer to the reason behind Alan's horrendous acts, Dysart discovers many previously locked-away secrets within himself. Sidney Lumet directs a cast that also features Colin Blakely, Harry Andrews, Jenny Agutter and Kate Reid. (Persky-Bright, Winkast/U-A) (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)
