Préparez vos mouchoirs![]() (Get Out Your Handkerchiefs) Belgium-France (1978): Comedy/Drama/Romance
This film's lightly mocking title sets the tone for this Bertrand Blier-directed amalgam of the sentimental and sardonic. Gérard Depardieu plays an at-wit's-end husband who'll go to any lengths to sexually satisfy his wife (Carole Laure). Depardieu decides that the best thing to cure Laure's boredom would be if she took a lover; thus, he chooses Patrick Dewaere for the "job". But Dewaere isn't any more successful in arousing Laure than her husband had been, so he and Depardieu determine that Laure needs a child in her life. They select a 13-year-old boy to be Carole's adopted son -- and it is he who finally quenches her erotic yearnings. Also nominated for a Golden Globe, Get Out Your Handkerchiefs won a "best foreign film" Oscar®, as well as a French César award for best score (by Georges Delerue).
