A Little Romance
US (1979): Romance/Comedy
This disarming comedy features Diane Lane as 13-year-old American Lauren King, living in Paris with her businessman stepfather (Arthur Hill) and her promiscuous mother (Sally Kellerman). Mom is currently enamored with pretentious-filmmaker George de Marco (David Dukes), and it is on the set of de Marco's latest picture that Lauren meets another 13-year-old, insatiable French film buff Daniel Michon (Thelonious Bernard). A likeable street-smart petty thief and gambler, Daniel is instantly attracted to Lauren. With the help of roguish old Julius (Laurence Olivier), Lauren and Daniel arrange a romantic rendezvous under the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. Naturally, when the kids disappear it's a cause for international concern, but all ends as it should. Some of the best moments in the picture belong to Broderick Crawford, unselfconsciously playing "himself" at a movie party. George Roy Hill directis for Orion-Warner Bros.
