Germany (1986): Drama The following plot synopsis contains ****SPOILERS**** Vienna, the autumn of 1937. Although the signs of Nazi oppression are already everywhere, Carola Hell (Sunnyi Melles), a promising young actress, and the Jewish writer Martin Hofmann (Tobias Engel) are nonetheless reluctant to leave the country. It is not until Hitler marches into Austria on 11 March 1938 that they decide to make a desperate last-minute attempt to flee to Prague. While Carola is allowed to leave Vienna, Martin is refused permission. The next day, Martin is informed about Carola's safe arrival in Prague. The taxi driver who took them to the station the night before offers to help Martin to cross the Czechoslovakian border illegally. Relieved by this prospect, Martin is walking through Vienna when he is spotted by two SS patrols; he is unable to elude them before they demand his papers. "No passport? Come with us!"
