The Children's Storefront

US (1988): Documentary/Short

The Children's Storefront is a tuition-free, independent elementary school in Harlem. It is dedicated to providing a strong, structured academic program to local children, in an environment that gives them the support and encouragement they need to overcome the everyday adversity that marks their lives. The school was founded in 1966 by poet Ned O'Gorman as a small preschool for neighborhood children. A first grade was added in 1981, and one additional grade opened in each subsequent year until its first eighth grade class graduated in 1989. The school currently enrolls 145 students, and is located in four brownstone buildings, which the school acquired and renovated over a period of years. (The Children's Storefront School)
