Cinema Paradiso
(Nuovo cinema Paradiso)

France-Italy (1988): Comedy/Drama

A famous film director (Jacques Perrin) returns home to a Sicilian village for the first time after almost 30 years. He reminisces about his childhood at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist (Philippe Noiret), first brought about his love of films. He is also reminded of his lost teenage love, Elena (Agnese Nano), who moved away before he left for Rome. (Amazon.com) Salvatore Cascio plays young Toto, and Marco Leonardi portrays his adolescent years. Written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore.

(The 2-disc DVD "Deluxe Edition", released in 2006, includes both the original theatrical release and a re-edited "director's cut" that includes over 50 minutes of added scenes, most of which give some kind of closure to the Toto-Elena relationship. This is one of my all-time favorite films -- a definite "desert island" selection! -- Gary Moody)
