While helicopters overhead spray against a Medfly infestation a group of Los Angeles lives intersect, some casually, some to more lasting effect. While they go out to concerts and jazz clubs and even have their pools cleaned, they also lie, drink, and cheat. Death itself seems never to be far away, even on a fishing trip. This time, director-writer Robert Altman's ensemble includes Matthew Modine, Fred Ward, Chris Penn, Anne Archer, Julianne Moore, Madeleine Stowe, Tim Robbins, Robert Downey Jr., Bruce Davison, Andie MacDowell, Tom Waits, Lily Tomlin, Frances McDormand, Annie Ross, Jack Lemmon, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lili Taylor, Peter Gallagher, Lori Singer, Lyle Lovett, Buck Henry and Huey Lewis; and, unlike The Player, they all have more than cameo roles.
