Chernobyl Heart

US (2003): Documentary/Short

The world's worst nuclear accident occurred on April 26, 1986 when an explosion at Chernobyl sent 190 tons of radioactive uranium and graphite into the air. People in the region were exposed to radiation 90 times greater than that from the explosion of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. Congenital birth defects have increased by 250% since the disaster. Sixteen years later, Adi Roche, director of Chernobyl Children's Project, brings medical and humanitarian aid to the millions of children in need. Traveling through Belarus from mental asylums to homes to hospitals, the film documents the effects of the devastating diseases ravaging the young population.
