Two warships, the H.M.S. Surprise under the command of Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and the French ship Acheron, play a game of cat and mouse off the coast of Brazil during the Napoleonic Wars. As Aubrey attempts to outwit and outmaneuver the Acheron, his friend, ship's doctor Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), takes an injured young midshipman under his wing and shares his studies as a naturalist with the boy.
