In a Maori tribe that is losing its traditions and its strength to modern culture, a young girl (Keisha Castle-Hughes) must overcome patriarchal prejudice to convince her beloved grandfather (Rawriri Paratene) that she may be the tribe's predestined leader. Because she is a girl, young Pai is excluded from her grandfather's classes in Maori culture, but her determination to prove her worth in his eyes leads her to defy him.
