Born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. Played leads and supporting parts in many films of the 50s and 60s, often as a restive young man, but he was best known to American audiences as star of "The Rebel" TV series. He was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor in TWILIGHT OF HONOR (1963). His death was caused by an overdose of drugs he was taking for a nervous disorder. Notable film credits include OUR MISS BROOKS (1956), TEACHER'S PET and NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS (both 1958), PILLOW TALK and THE FBI STORY (both 1959), HELL IS FOR HEROES, THE INTERNS and A GIRL NAMED TAMIKO (all 1962), THE HOOK and TWILIGHT OF HONOR (both 1963), THE YOUNG LOVERS (1964), YOUNG DILLINGER and DIE, MONSTER, DIE! (both 1965), MISSION MARS, FEVER HEAT and LOS ASESINOS (all 1968); his Japanese "creature features" include FURANKENSHUTAIN TAI CHITEI KAIJÛ BARAGON / FRANKENSTEIN VS. BARAGON and KAIJÛ DAISENSO / GODZILLA VS.
