Born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. Played leads and supporting parts in many films of the 50s and 60s, often as a restive young man, but he was best known to American audiences as star of "The Rebel" TV series. He was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor in TWILIGHT OF HONOR (1963). His death was caused by an overdose of drugs he was taking for a nervous disorder.

(both 1965), MISSION MARS, FEVER HEAT and LOS ASESINOS (all 1968); his Japanese "creature features" include FURANKENSHUTAIN TAI CHITEI KAIJÛ BARAGON / FRANKENSTEIN VS. BARAGON and KAIJÛ DAISENSO / GODZILLA VS. MONSTER ZERO (both 1965) and KOKUSAI HIMITSU KEISATSU: ZETTAI ZETSUMI / THE KILLING BOTTLE (1967).
