Born Edward Albert Heimberger in Rock Island, IL, and educated at the University of Minnesota. Personable character actor from radio and the stage who entered films in 1938, reprising his stage role as the star pitcher for a military college's baseball team in BROTHER RAT. In his long and varied stage, screen and television career, Albert's roles ranged from amiable best friend of the romantic lead, charming and not so charming con men and even outright villains. He was most memorable as the photographer in ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953) and the reformed alcoholic in I'LL CRY TOMORROW (1955).
In the 1960s Albert co-starred with Eva Gabor on TV's long-running "Green Acres" (1965-71) and returned to films as Cybill Shepherd's impeccably Waspish father in THE HEARTBREAK KID (1972). Other notable feature film credits include BOMBARDIER (1943), SMASH-UP: THE STORY OF A WOMAN (1947), CARRIE (1952), OKLAHOMA! and I'LL CRY TOMORROW (both 1955), THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON (1956), THE SUN ALSO RISES and THE JOKER IS WILD (both 1957), THE YOUNG DOCTORS (1961), THE LONGEST DAY (1962), CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D. (1963), McQ and THE LONGEST YARD (both 1974), WHIFFS (1975), THE CONCORDE: AIRPORT '79 and THE BORDER (both 1979), YES, GIORGIO and THE ACT (both 1982), DREAMSCAPE (1984), BRENDA STARR (1989), as well as many made-for-TV movies.
