Sara Allgood
(1883 - 1950)

Born in Dublin, Ireland. With the Abbey Theatre from 1904. On the British screen, she repeated her greatest stage success playing Juno in Hitchcock's JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK (1930). In 1940 she went to Hollywood and played amiable character roles in many major films, typically as a kindly mother. She became a US citizen in 1945.

Notable film credits include THE WORLD, THE FLESH, THE DEVIL (1932), RIDERS TO THE SEA (1935), THAT HAMILTON WOMAN, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE and HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY (all 1941), ROXIE HART, THIS ABOVE ALL, IT HAPPENED IN FLATBUSH and THE WAR AGAINST MRS. HADLEY (all 1942), CITY WITHOUT MEN (1943), JANE EYRE and THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM (both 1944), KITTY (1945), THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE and CLUNY BROWN (both 1946), MOTHER WORE TIGHTS, MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA, MY WILD IRISH ROSE and THE FABULOUS DORSEYS (all 1947), ONE TOUCH OF VENUS and THE ACCUSED (both 1948), CHALLENGE TO LASSIE (1949) and CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and her last film, SIERRA (both 1950).

She died of a heart attack in California in 1950 at the age of 70.
