Born Julia Elizabeth Wells in Walton-on-Thames, England. Wholesome, popular star of the 1960s and 70s who began her career touring in musical revues with her mother and stepfather and whose lilting, sweet soprano voice and prim British charm won her kudos as a Broadway musical star. Although she lost all three film roles she created on Broadway (The Boyfriend, 1954; My Fair Lady, 1956; and Camelot, 1960) to non-singers in their film incarnations, Andrews nevertheless scored a triumph by winning an Oscar for her film debut, MARY POPPINS (1964) competing against Audrey Hepburn who starred in the film of MY FAIR LADY. A box-office star after appearing in the blockbuster musical THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965), followed by the less successful large-scale musical vehicles, STAR! (1968) and DARLING LILI (1970), Andrews attempted to break away from her goody-goody stereotyping by appearing in less wholesome, non-musical fare (e.g. Hitchcock's TORN CURTAIN, 1966). However, it was only through her subsequent collaborations with second husband Blake Edwards (e.g. THE TAMARIND SEED, 1974, S.O.B., 1981, VICTOR/VICTORIA, 1982, THAT'S LIFE!, 1986) that she proved herself a deft comedienne and a warm dramatic actress. Later film credits includ CIN CIN / A FINE ROMANCE (1991), RELATIVE VALUES (2000), THE PRINCESS DIARIES (2001), and SHREK 2 (voice) and THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT (both 2004). She was married to production designer Tony Walton from 1959 until 1967. She married producer-director Blake Edwards in 1969. Andrews was named a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on the 1999 New Year's Eve Honours List. In 2001 she was a recipient of the Kennedy Center honors and was voted the 59th greates Briton ever in a 2002 BBC poll.
