Born Betty Joan Perske in New York City, she became a tough-talking, husky-voiced leading lady who broke into films at the age of 19 opposite Humphrey Bogart in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944). She subsequently married Bogart, 25 years her senior, creating a formidable team on and off screen. They remained married until his death in 1957. Like Garbo and Dietrich before her, Bacall's androgynous beauty made possible a wide variety of roles, from the wealthy, enigmatic Vivian in THE BIG SLEEP (1946), to the distraught wife in the melodramatic WRITTEN ON THE WIND (1956), to her award-winning Broadway performance in Applause (1970).
In 1974, after an eight year hiatus, Bacall returned to the screen in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, making a smooth transition to playing older women. She received a best supporting actress nomination for her work as Hannah Morgan in Barbra Streisand's THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES (1996). Later film credits include MY FELLOW AMERICANS (1996), LE JOUR ET LA NUIT (1997), MADELINE: LOST IN PARIS (voice), DIAMONDS, PRESENCE OF MIND and THE VENICE PROJECT (all 1999), DOGVILLE and THE LIMIT (both 2003) and BIRTH (2004), as well as many television appearances. Her autobiography, Lauren Bacall, By Myself, was published in 1979. Married to second husband, Jason Robards, Jr. from 1961 to 1969.
