Pandro S. Berman
(1905 - 1996)
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Distinguished and prolific producer who entered film as an assistant director at Universal (where his father, Harry M. Berman, was an executive) and then moved on to editing at RKO. Producing from 1931, he worked almost exclusively for RKO and then for MGM.

Berman's huge output contained a number of entertaining, high-quality productions ranging from superb literary adaptations such as THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939) and SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH (1962) to the Astaire/Rogers classics THE GAY DIVORCEE (1934) and TOP HAT (1935). He made an atypical foray into socially conscious filmmaking with Richard Brooks's then-searing drama BLACKBOARD JUNGLE (1955).
