Born in St. Joseph, Missouri. Became involved with photography while working in a Los Angeles camera shop and served as US Army photographer during WW I. Entered films in 1919 as still photographer but within months graduated to assistant cameraman and finally director of photography. Gained a reputation for his outdoor photography and was one of Hollywood's first cameramen to use actual locations. Did some of his best work in the 40s for 20th Century-Fox. Switched to TV work in the early 50s. Changed his name from Brodin to Brodine in 1930.

(1940), THE HOUSE ON 92ND STREET (1945), SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY (1946), 13 RUE MADELEINE, KISS OF DEATH and BOOMERANG! (all 1947), I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE (1949), THE FROGMEN (1951), 5 FINGERS (1952) and CAPTAIN SCARFACE (1953). His sister-in-law was actress Helen Ferguson (1900-1977).
