Born in Antioch, California. A former entertainer, he appeared in vaudeville, the Ziegfeld Follies and short musical films of the late 20s and early 30s. At one time he was also pianist for Irving Berlin. From the mid-30s he contributed numerous songs for Hollywood films and the recording industry. From 1940 he collaborated with Jimmy Van Heusen, and together they composed many songs for Bing Crosby.
