Born in Freeport, Illinois. He entered American film as a title writer for Robert Z. Leonard's JAZZMANIA (1923). Other notable credits include THE MIDNIGHT KISS (1926), THE CAT AND THE CANARY and THE JAZZ SINGER (both 1927), THE COHENS AND THE KELLYS IN PARIS (1928), DIVORCE MADE EASY and HER HUSBAND'S WOMEN (both 1929), FEET FIRST (1930), THE CISCO KID and MYSTERY RANCH (both 1931), SON OF A SAILOR (1933) and his last film, HAROLD TEEN (a.k.a. DANCING FOOL, 1934).
