Jeanne Eagels

Born Amelia Jean Eagles in Kansas City, Kansas. A celebrated beauty, she appeared on the stage from the age of seven. Became famous in the role of Sadie Thompson in Rain. She made only a handful of Hollywood films before her death from an overdose of heroin: HOUSE OF FEAR (1915), THE WORLD AND THE WOMAN (1916), THE FIRES OF YOUTH and UNDER FALSE COLORS (both 1917), THE CROSS BEARER (1918), THE MADONNA OF THE SLUMS (1919), MAN, WOMAN AND SIN (1927) and THE LETTER and JEALOUSY (both 1929). Her life story was told in JEANNE EAGELS, a 1957 movie starring Kim Novak. Eagels is quoted as saying: "I'm the greatest actress in the world and the greatest failure. And nobody gives a damn."
