Born in Squaw Valley, California. Bitten by the acting bug while still in college, Irwin played on stage from 1924 and appeared in some 100 light films from 1928, often typecast as a sad-eyed, shy, bumbling but amiable, folksy guy. He was nominated for a best supporting-actor Oscar for PIGSKIN PARADE (1936).
Other notable screen credits include his first film, MOTHER KNOWS BEST (1928), PARAMOUNT ON PARADE (1930), THE MAGNIFICENT LIE (1931), THE BIG BROADCAST (1932), GOING HOLLYWOOD (1933), VIVA VILLA! (1934), AFTER OFFICE HOURS (1935), CEILING ZERO (1936), SMALL TOWN BOY and I'LL TAKE ROMANCE (both 1937), MR. BOGGS STEPS OUT (1938), HOLLYWOOD CAVALCADE and IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU (both 1939), OUR TOWN (1940), THE BRIDE CAME C.O.D. (1941), BLONDIE FOR VICTORY (1942), HE HIRED THE BOSS (1943), THE GREAT MIKE (1944), PILLOW TO POST (1946), HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS (1947), STRIKE IT RICH (1949), FATHER IS A BACHELOR (1950), FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE (1960), SON OF FLUBBER (1963) and THE MISADVENTURES OF MERLIN JONES (1964). In the 50s he co-starred with wife June Collyer (1906-1968) in the TV series "The Trouble With Father," which eventually became "The Stu Erwin Show."
