Perry Ferguson
(1901 - 1963)

An art director at RKO for many years, he was active during the 30s and 40s and created the look for many memorable films, including the non-nominated BALL OF FIRE (1941), THE OUTLAW (1943), UP IN ARMS and BELLE OF THE YUKON (both 1944), THE KID FROM BROOKLYN, SONG OF THE SOUTH, THE STRANGER (prod. designer) and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (all 1946), THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, DESERT FURY and THE BISHOP'S WIFE (all 1947), ROPE (1948) and THE BIG SKY (1952).

A photograph (left) of Ferguson appears on one stamp of a sheet of 10 USA 37¢ commemorative postage stamps, issued 25 February 2003, celebrating American Filmmaking: Behind the Scenes. The stamp, which honors art direction, shows Ferguson completing a sketch of Kane Castle for the film CITIZEN KANE (1941).
