Born in New York City. Art director who entered American film in 1934 at Paramount with MISS FANE'S BABY IS STOLEN (uncredited). Other Paramount credits include THE LEMON DROP KID and IT'S A GIFT (both also 1934), COLLEGIATE and GIRL OF THE OZARKS (both 1936), WELLS FARGO (1937), IF I WERE KING (1938), RULERS OF THE SEA (1939), TYPHOON, THE HOWARDS OF VIRGINIA and THE WAY OF ALL FLESH (all 1940). He became supervising art director at Universal, and his credits there (among over 160 films from 1942 until 1947) include NIGHTMARE, THE SPOILERS (assoc. art director), PITTSBURGH and WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME (all 1942), SHADOW OF A DOUBT, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, CORVETTE K-225, SON OF DRACULA, GUNG HO!, MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT and HIS BUTLER'S SISTER (all 1943), THE INVISIBLE MAN'S REVENGE, THE MUMMY'S GHOST, THE MERRY MONAHANS, THE MUMMY'S CURSE, THE CLIMAX, CAN'T HELP SINGING and ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN SOCIETY (all 1944), UNDER WESTERN SKIES, FRISCO SAL, LADY ON A TRAIN and HOUSE OF DRACULA (all 1945), TANGIER and CANYON PASSAGE (both 1946). He was art director for Leo McCarey's GOOD SAM (1948) at RKO. Some of his later credits (occasionally back at Paramount) include THE SUNDOWNERS (1950), THE GREAT MISSOURI RAID (1951), THE SEVEN LITTLE FOYS and THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (both 1955), BEAU JAMES and THE SAD SACK (both 1957), HOUSEBOAT and THE COLLOSUS OF NEW YORK (both 1958) and his last film, HANG 'EM HIGH (1968).
