Richard Hageman

Born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. A concert pianist at six, he performed as an accompanist and later a conductor at Amsterdam's Royal Opera Company. He went to the US in 1906, becoming an American citizen in 1915. From 1914 to 1932 he conducted the orchestra of the New York Metropolitan Opera and later various other symphonic ensembles. In Hollywood from the late 30s, he composed scores for a number of films, winning acclaim for his adaptations of folk themes for several major John Ford productions.

Notable non-nominated composing credits include MEN WITH WINGS (1938), HOTEL IMPERIAL and RULERS OF THE SEA (both 1939), PARIS IS CALLING (1941), ANGEL AND THE BADMAN, THE FUGITIVE and MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA (all 1947), FORT APACHE and 3 GODFATHERS (both 1948), SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949), WAGON MASTER (1950), ABENTEUER IN WIEN / ADVENTURES IN VIENNA (1952) and STOLEN IDENTITY (1953). Hageman composed much uncredited stock music that was used in Univeral features from 1941 until 1946. He also appeared on-camera from 1943 until 1954 in such films as HI DIDDLE DIDDLE, NEW ORLEANS, 3 GODFATHERS, THE GREAT CARUSO and RHAPSODY.
