Charles D. Hall
(1899 - 1968)

Born in England, UK. Art director who entered American film as a youngster at First National Pictures with Charlie Chaplin's short A DOG'S LIFE (1918). He worked on many Chaplin shorts and features, including THE BOND and SHOULDER ARMS (both also 1918), SUNNYSIDE and A DAY'S PLEASURE (both 1919), THE KID and THE IDLE CLASS (both 1921), PAY DAY (1922), THE PILGRIM (1923), THE GOLD RUSH (1925, art director and technical director - both uncredited), THE CIRCUS (1928 - uncredited art director), CITY LIGHTS (1931, settings) and MODERN TIMES (1936, settings), as well as other features shot at the Chaplin studios, such as Josef von Sternberg's WOMAN OF THE SEA (1926).

At Universal, he was technical director for THE LYING TRUTH (1922) and THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) and production designer for ONLY YESTERDAY (1933). He also was production designer for TOPPER TAKES A TRIP and CAPTAIN FURY (both 1939) at Hal Roach Studios.

His notable non-nominated art direction credits include THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1927), and many of the Universal classic films of the 1930s: SHOW BOAT (1929), ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930), DRACULA (both English and Spanish), WATERLOO BRIDGE and FRANKENSTEIN (all 1931), MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, BACK STREET and THE OLD DARK HOUSE (all 1932), THE VAMPIRE BAT and THE INVISIBLE MAN (both 1933), THE BLACK CAT and IMITATION OF LIFE (both 1934), BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, DIAMOND JIM and MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (all 1935), SHOW BOAT (1936). Moving to Hal Roach Stuidos, he was art director for SWISS MISS (1938), THE HOUSEKEEPER'S DAUGHTER (1939), A CHUMP AT OXFORD, ONE MILLION B.C., SAPS AT SEA and CAPTAIN CAUTION (all 1940), TANKS A MILLION, ALL AMERICAN CO-ED and FIESTA (all 1941), FLYING WITH MUSIC (1942) and several other features in the late 1940s. His last film for Hal Roach was TWO KNIGHTS FROM BROOKLYN (1949). He then worked on a couple of independent "b" movies: NOT WANTED (1949) and THE VICIOUS YEARS (1950) for Emerald Productions. His last two films were Harry Horner's RED PLANET MARS (1952) at UA and Jacques Tourneur's APPOINTMENT IN HONDURAS (1953) at RKO.
