Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied for several years at the Art Institute of Chicago. He settled in Los Angeles in 1914 and was a director-cameraman at 20th Century Fox Studios for 47 years.
Notable credits include: THE LOST WORLD (1925, assoc. researcher & assoc. technical director), THE PATENT LEATHER KID (1927, cinematographer), THE SKY HAWK (1930, mechanical effects), JUST IMAGINE (also 1930, art director & uncredited set decorator), BODY AND SOUL and A CONNECTICUT YANKEE (both 1931, both special effects), DANTE'S INFERNO (1935, technical staff), IN OLD CHICAGO (1937, special effects), FOUR MEN AND A PRAYER (1938, uncredited process photography), 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (1954, effects photographer), THE GIANT CLAW (1957, technical effects), THE GIANT GILA MONSTER (1959, special effects) and MY DOG BUDDY (1960, cinematographer). In his leisure time, he made painting trips to the high Sierra and the desert between Palm Springs and Banning. He died in Los Angeles in 1970.
