Born in Garfield, New Jersey. Entered American film as an assistant director for two 1916 silents distributed by Pathé: THE SHINE GIRL and PRUDENCE AND THE PIRATE. There is a break in his career until 1925 when he went to work at Warners as an a.d. in 1925. He was to remain with the studio until his death in 1952. His ass't director credits include BOBBED HAIR (1925), DON JUAN (1926), THE JAZZ SINGER (1927), GLORIOUS BETSY (1928), SVENGALI (1931), 42ND STREET, TUGBOAT ANNIE and FOOTLIGHT PARADE (all 1933) and TWENTY MILLION SWEETHEARTS (1934).
Hollingshead worked as an uncredited producer on CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935), and he produced the musical short THE SUNDAY ROUND-UP (1936) and the documentary THE ROMANCE OF LOUISIANA (1937). He was an uncredited assoc. producer for the western EMPTY HOLSTERS (1937).
With THE ROMANCE OF ROBERT BURNS (1937), Hollingshead became producer of hundreds of Warner Bros. one- and two-reelers in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
His daughters were child actresses Ebba Mona and Tula Belle.
