Born in New York City. Shortly after being admitted to the New York bar in 1917, he saw WW I service as a lieutenant with counter-espionage for US Intelligence. Upon discharge he began writing and producing for Broadway. In 1927 he went to Hollywood as a production supervisor for Sam Goldwyn and was appointed producer at Paramount in 1933. He moved to MGM in 1942 and became an independent producer in the mid-50s.

(1955) and THE WAR LOVER (1962). He was the first husband (1936-42) of Myrna Loy. He authored six popular children's books in collaboration with his third wife, the former Leonora Schinasi.
