Erich Wolfgang Korngold
(1897 - 1957)
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Brünn, Moravia, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic). Renowned musical prodigy who scored theatrical productions for Max Reinhardt before beginning his memorable film career. In the US from the late 1920s, Korngold worked almost exclusively for Warner Bros. His rich, intricate compositions for films such as ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) and KINGS ROW (1942) were an important influence on the development of the Hollywood score.

Other notable composing credits include THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER and ANOTHER DAWN (both 1937), THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938), JUAREZ and THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (both 1939), THE SEA HAWK (1940), THE SEA WOLF (1941), THE CONSTANT NYMPH (1943), BETWEEN TWO WORLDS (1944), DEVOTION, DECEPTION and OF HUMAN BONDAGE (all 1946), ESCAPE ME NEVER (1947) and MAGIC FIRE (1956).

Along with fellow Europeans Max Steiner and Franz Waxman, Korngold elevated the status of film music from incidental accompaniment to a new art form. He worked in all areas of musical composition, never limiting himself to film scores alone; his operas, symphonies, chamber music and concertos are still performed today.
