The Patriot (1928)
Born in Hamburg, Germany. A former stage and screen actor, he began writing scripts in 1912 and for several years supplied the screenplays for the German films of Urban Gad. In 1918 he started a long and fruitful collaboration with Ernst Lubitsch and subsequently wrote, alone or in collaboration, most of the screenplays of the director's silent films. In 1923 he accompanied Lubitsch to Hollywood, where he continued his activity as screenwriter, for him and for Milestone, Wyler and other directors.

Notable credits in the US include THE EAGLE (1925, uncredited), QUALITY STREET (1927), THE GARDEN OF EDEN and THE PATRIOT (both 1928), WILD ORCHIDS, ETERNAL LOVE, BETRAYAL, THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY, THE KISS and DEVIL-MAY-CARE (all 1929), A LADY'S MORALS (1930), PRIVATE LIVES and JUST A GIGOLO (both 1931), MY LIPS BETRAY and BY CANDLELIGHT (both 1933), BROADWAY GONDOLIER (1935), ONE HUNDRED MEN AND A GIRL (1937), A DESPERATE ADVENTURE (1938), BROADWAY SERENADE (1939), WEST POINT WIDOW and IT STARTED WITH EVE (both 1941) and THE MAD GHOUL (1943).
