Sound supervisor at Universal from 1933 until 1936, production manager and second unit director who entered American film as a sound recordist for THEY JUST HAD TO GET MARRIED (1933). Other Universal 1933 credits include THE KISS BEFORE THE MIRROR, DON'T BET ON LOVE, LADIES MUST LOVE, COUSELLOR AT LAW and BY CANDLELIGHT. 1934 credits include THE COUNTESS OF MONTE CRISTO, GLAMOUR, AFFAIRS OF A GENTLEMAN, THE BLACK CAT and IMITATION OF LIFE. Sound supervisor from 1933, he didn't start to receive credit until 1935. Later sound supervisor credits include PRINCESS O'HARA, MISTER DYNAMITE, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, DIAMOND JIM, THE AFFAIR OF SUSAN, EAST OF JAVA, REMEMBER LAST NIGHT? and MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (all 1935) and DANGEROUS WATERS, THE INVISIBLE RAY, NEXT TIME WE LOVE, SUTTER'S GOLD, LOVE BEFORE BREAKFAST, DRACULA'S DAUGHTER and SHOW BOAT (all 1936).
In 1939, Kurland moved to MGM where he worked as an uncredited assistant director on BURN 'EM UP O'CONNOR (1939), CONGO MAISIE, TWO GIRLS ON BROADWAY, PHANTOM RAIDERS and DULCY (all 1940) and ANDY HARDY'S PRIVATE SECRETARY and TARZAN'S SECRET TREASURE (both 1941). After working as an uncredited unit manager for Vincent Minnelli's I DOOD IT (1943) at MGM, Kurland returned to Universal and worked as production manager (sometimes uncredited) for THE NAKED CITY (1948), RED CANYON, ARCTIC MANHUNT, YES SIR THAT'S MY BABY, SOUTH SEA SINNER, CITY ACROSS THE RIVER and ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE KILLER, BORIS KARLOFF (all 1949) and MA AND PA KETTLE GO TO TOWN (1950). He became an executive production manager for Burt Lancaster and Harold Hecht's company in 1958 for their production of RUN SILENT RUN DEEP (1958). He continued with them in that capacity for SEPARATE TABLES and THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE (both 1959), THE UNFORGIVEN and ELMER GANTRY (both 1960), THE YOUNG SAVAGES (1961) and THE BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ and TARAS BULBA (both 1962). He finished up his career as exec. production manager for FLIGHT FROM ASHIYA (1964) and as production manager for WITH SIX YOU GET EGGROLL (1968).
