Born Robert Nelson Lee in Butte, Montana. Coming from a show business family (his parents were stage actors), his brother was director Rowland V. Lee (1891-1975). Robert's first screenplay was for his brother's film SHIRLEY OF THE CIRCUS (1922) at Fox. Other films written by Robert (alone or in collaboration) and directed by Rowland include YOU CAN'T GET AWAY WITH IT (1923), IN LOVE WITH LOVE (1924), THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY (1925), THE OUTSIDER and THE SILVER TREASURE (both 1926) -- all at Fox -- and TOWER OF LONDON (1939, Universal) and CAPTAIN KIDD (1945, UA).
