Boris Leven

Born in Moscow, Russia. Russian emigré who began his film career as a sketch artist at Paramount in 1933 and moved to Fox three years later. Leven proved his mastery across a wide range of genres, including westerns, science fiction films and musicals, and worked often with Martin Scorsese.

Some of Leven's notable art direction credits include ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND (1938), THE FLYING DEUCES (1939), SECOND CHORUS (1940), HELLO, FRISCO, HELLO (1943), THE SHOCKING MISS PILGRIM (1947), MR. PEABODY AND THE MERMAID (1948), CRISS CROSS (1949), SUDDEN FEAR and THE STAR (both 1953), THE SILVER CHALICE (1954) and JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL (1973). As a production designer, some of his notable credits include THE SHANGHAI GESTURE (1941), THE JACKIE ROBINSON STORY (1950), DONOVAN'S BRAIN (1953), 1956: GIANT (1956), ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959), WEST SIDE STORY (1961), TWO FOR THE SEESAW (1962), STRAIT-JACKET (1964), THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965), THE SAND PEBBLES (1966), STAR! (1968), THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WANDA JUNE (both 1971), THE NEW CENTURIONS (1972), SHANKS (1974), MANDINGO (1975), NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), THE LAST WALTZ and MATILDA (both 1978), THE KING OF COMEDY (1983), FLETCH (1985), WILDCATS and his last film, THE COLOR OF MONEY (both 1986).
