Born Jane Alice Peters in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Beautiful, vivacious blonde who made her screen debut at age 12 in Allan Dwan's A PERFECT CRIME (1921) and entered film fulltime in 1925. At first repeatedly cast in virginal ingenue roles, Lombard displayed an energetic comic talent in TWENTIETH CENTURY (1934). She went on to become one of the screen's finest comediennes of the 1930s, showcasing her intelligence and charm in a number of screwball comedies, notably MY MAN GODFREY (1936), NOTHING SACRED (1937) and her swansong, TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942). On January 16, 1942, Carole, her mother, and 20 other people were flying back to California from a War Bond rally in Indiana when their plane crashed outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. All perished. The highly acclaimed comedy actress was dead at the age of 33 and few have been able to match her talents since.
