Life with Father (1947)
Born John Peverell Marley in San Jose, California; from 1939 until 1953 often billed simply as Peverell Marley. He joined Famous Players-Lasky directly out of Hollywood High School and before he reached 22 collaborated on the cinematography of Cecil B. De Mille's THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1923). He was behind the camera on many other sumptuous De Mille silents and during the talkie era worked on many glossy productions for such studios as MGM, Fox, and Warners, demonstrating great technical expertise.

With over 100 films, some of Marley's notable cinematography credits include THE KING OF KINGS (1927), DYNAMITE (1929), THE HOUSE OF ROTHSCHILD and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (both 1934), CLIVE OF INDIA, CARDINAL RICHELIEU, THE THREE MUSKETEERS, THANKS A MILLION and KING OF BURLESQUE (all 1935), SING, BABY, SING and WINTERSET (both 1936), THE TOAST OF NEW YORK and IN OLD CHICAGO (both 1937), ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND and SUEZ (both 1938), HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (1939), THE MAN I MARRIED (a.k.a. I MARRIED A NAZI, 1940), HUDSON'S BAY, MOON OVER MIAMI and CHARLEY'S AUNT (all 1941), THE MAGNIFICENT DOPE (1942), THE MEANEST MAN IN THE WORLD (1943), FOUR JILLS IN A JEEP (1944), PRIDE OF THE MARINES (1945), NIGHT AND DAY and OF HUMAN BONDAGE (both 1946), THE TWO MRS. CARROLLS and LIFE WITH FATHER (both 1947), WHIPLASH (1948), HOMICIDE, LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING and JOHN LOVES MARY (all 1949), PRETTY BABY (1950), THE GROOM WORE SPURS (1951), THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952), HOUSE OF WAX (1953), PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE (1954), SERENADE (1956), THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS (1957), THE LEFT HANDED GUN (1958) and his last film, THE SINS OF RACHEL CADE (1961).

In the 30s he married and divorced actress Lina Basquette and in 1943, while in the uniform of an Army sergeant, he eloped with Linda Darnell to Las Vegas. They divorced in 1952. Marley is one of only five cinematographers to have a star on the famous "Hollywood Walk of Fame." (The others are Hal Mohr, Ray Rennahan, Leon Shamroy and Conrad L. Hall.)
