Born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Cinematographer with almost 90 films to his credit who entered American film with the western BREEZY JIM (1919) for David Horsley Productions. By the mid-1920s he was working at studios like Fox and Warners for directors such as Raoul Walsh (WHAT PRICE GLORY, 1926) and Ray Enright on Rin Tin Tin's JAWS OF STEEL (1927). His first sound film was STARK MAD (1929) at Warner Bros. Other films that year include THE DESERT SONG, NOAH'S ARK, THE HOTTENTOT, GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY, SKIN DEEP, EVIDENCE, THE SHOW OF SHOWS and THE AVIATOR. (This gives one a good idea of just how busy he was during this period of his career.) Other notable cinematography credits include MAMMY (1930), SVENGALI, NIGHT NURSE and THE CISCO KID (all 1931), THE MOUTHPIECE, WEEK-END WIVES and 20,000 YEARS IN SING SING (all 1932), THE BOWERY and BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS (both 1933), THE LAST GENTLEMAN and BORN TO BE BAD (both 1934), BREWSTER'S MILLIONS and CHARLIE CHAN IN SHANGHAI (both 1935), FOLIES-BERGÉRE, THANK YOU, JEEVES! and CRACK-UP (all 1936), NANCY STEELE IS MISSING, LANCER SPY and OFF TO THE RACES (all 1937), BATTLE OF BROADWAY and SHARPSHOOTERS (both 1938), THE CISCO KID AND THE LADY (1939), GIRLS UNDER 21 (1940) and THE LONE WOLF KEEPS A DATE, SO LONG MR. CHUMPS and his last film, THE PHANTOM SUBMARINE (all 1941).
