William Anthony McGuire
(1881 - 1940)

Born in Chicago, Illinois. Writer and playwright who entered American film with the use of one of his earlier scenarios for THE DEVIL, THE SERVANT AND THE MAN (1912) at the Selig Polyscope Company. It has been stated that as a playwright, McGuire never started writing the second act until after the play had gone into rehearsal. A few of his stories and plays were used in silents, but it wasn't until Eddie Cantor brought his play Kid Boots (1926) and his musical Whoopee! (1930) to the screen that McGuire enjoyed real screen popularity. Other Cantor vehicles include THE KID FROM SPAIN (1932) and ROMAN SCANDALS (1933). McGuire was successful with light, romantic comedies and musicals, but he sometimes collaborated on dramas. Some other notable credits include OUT ALL NIGHT (1933), LITTLE MAN, WHAT NOW? (1934), THE GREAT ZIEGFELD and SUZY (both 1936), ROSALIE (1937, also producer), GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST (1938, producer), RISKY BUSINESS and THE HONEYMOON'S OVER (both 1939), LILLIAN RUSSELL (1940) and his last film, ZIEGFELD GIRL (1941, story).
