Born in Baltimore, Maryland. Composer and lyricist whose songs were first used in the FOX MOVIETONE FOLLIES OF 1929 (1929). Other notable films that used his scores or songs include BROADWAY, WORDS AND MUSIC, WHY LEAVE HOME?, SKIN DEEP and SONG OF KENTUCKY (all 1929), WINE, WOMEN AND SONG and GOODBYE LOVE (both 1933), TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE, THE PHANTOM RIDER, SING, BABY, SING, PIGSKIN PARADE and ONE IN A MILLION (all 1936), THIN ICE, HEIDI and LOVE AND HISSES (all 1937), REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM, KENTUCKY MOONSHINE and WE'RE GOING TO BE RICH (all 1938) and JOHNNY DOUGHBOY (1942, uncredited).

Among his many collaborators were Con Conrad, Lew Pollack, Sam Slept and Louis Alter. Some of his better-known songs are "All My Life," "Early Bird," "Moonshine Over Kentucky," "Sugar (That Sugar Baby O'Mine)," "Twilight on the Trail" and "You Turned the Tables on Me."
